My textile pieces always start with drawings because this is my way of extracting what is important to me about the environment.  I take quite an intuitive approach to the drawing in which I concentrate on surface qualities, blends of colours and simple shapes, to express a sense of atmosphere, rather than a literal representation of the place.  I draw environments that are busy and eclectic – places that are filled with an overload for the senses!  In this piece the city of Manchester is the subject with its uneasy mix of architecture and juxtapositions of building materials, forms and heritage.
